Fish oil is essential in maintaining a healthy heart and regulating blood pressure levels. Also known as Omega-3 fatty acids, fish oil is generally obtainable from salmon, tuna, mackerel, halibut, herrings, sardines, trout and sturgeon. Eating these fish can help to directly get the benefits of fish oil or else it could be taken as a food supplement. Three ounces of the above varieties of fish could provide approximately one gram of fish oil.

Fish oil supplements are made from mackerel, salmon, halibut, tuna and cod liver. A small amount of vitamin-E is included in the preparation, in order to prevent spoilage. Other nutrients such as iron, calcium and vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, C and D are also included in the supplement to make it more potent. When you are hoping to take fish oil by directly consuming fish; the method of cooking could have an effect on the amount of fish oil that would be successfully absorbed by the body. Baking and boiling the fish is the most beneficial way of absorbing fish oil by the body. Fried fish would not give the same benefit in absorbing fish oil by the body.

There are two omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil. They are namely, Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA). The human body does not produce its own omega-3 fatty acids. Even the omega-6 acids don't convert to omega-3. Omega-6 fatty acids are easily absorbed by the body from the diet. Omega-3 is always taken from outside, by eating fish or as a supplement. EPA and DHA, the two omega-3 fatty acids are helpful in reducing pain and swelling. This is the reason for fish oil being helpful in curing dry eyes and psoriasis.

There have been hundreds of scientific studies conducted on the benefits of fish oil. All of these studies confirm that omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial in curing so many illnesses in humans. Cancer, asthma, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, ADHD, depression and autoimmune diseases are some of them. Other than these notable benefits, fish oil is also considered to be beneficial in protecting you from air pollution, reduce symptoms of osteoarthritis, reduces signs of aging, improve fat burning and improve brain power and memory. It is also used as a supplement after heart transplant surgery, in order to prevent high blood pressure and kidney damage that would follow as a result of the surgery itself or as a result of the drugs taken after the transplant.

The triglyceride levels in the blood have a direct connection with heart attacks. The lower the triglyceride level; the healthier the heart would be. Doctors recommend physical activity and the lowering of dietary fat to reduce the triglyceride levels in the blood. The latest scientific studies reveal that fish oil could reduce the triglyceride levels in the blood by at least by 30-50%. There are FDA approved fish oil supplements that are used for this specific purpose.

The omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil would expand the blood vessels and thereby reduce high blood pressure to some extent. Fish oil supplements are considered effective in treating hypertension.

Fish oil is effective in reducing morning stiffness that are associated with rheumatoid arthritis. People taking fish oil supplements could reduce their dependency on anti-inflammatory drugs that are taken for rheumatoid arthritis.

Fish oil supplements combined with vitamin-B12 is said to reduce symptoms of painful periods in women. It would reduce the need of taking anti-inflammatory drugs for menstrual pain.

Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil are considered to improve bone density in older people. It could be taken in combination with calcium for better benefits. Osteoporosis could be reduced drastically by taking fish oil daily.

Fish oil is beneficial in reducing the amount of protein in the urine of patients with kidney problems. Long term use of omega-3 fatty acids would slow the loss of kidney function in patients.

Fish oil is also considered to help overweight people to lose weight effectively. It is helpful in reducing the blood glucose levels of overweight people. A specific fish oil supplement has been developed for this purpose and taking it with regular exercises have proven to give effective results in losing excessive weight. The insulin regulating ability of DHA and the anti-inflammatory benefits of EPA would help the body burn fat faster, when taking a fish oil supplement.

Fish oil supplements taken with a balanced diet would help to preserve lean muscle in cancer patients, who undergo chemotherapy. Muscle loss is very common in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Omega-3 fatty acids are helpful in boosting brain power and memory. These acids are said to halt the brain shrinking that is common with aging. The cerebral cortex and hippo-campus are the areas in the brain that would shrink with aging. Taking fish oil for long periods would help to halt this process to some extent.

The fish oil supplements are helpful in reducing the aging process. The DNA at the end of the chromosomes or telomeres as they are called would shorten with aging. This would inhibit stem cell functioning and halt cellular regeneration, which in turn would cause premature aging. Fish oil supplements are safe for most people when taken in the correct dosage. It is safe for children and pregnant mothers, if taken according to the advice of a physician. The most effective dosage for normal people would be three grams or less per day. Taking higher doses could have unwanted side effects such as keeping the blood from clotting and increase bleeding in such persons. Also, high doses could reduce the immune activity in the body. Bad breath, heartburn, loose stools, rashes and nose bleeding are some of the other symptoms that could occur when taken in high doses.

Fish oil is a supplement that is highly effective in treating so many diseases and conditions in humans. Taking it in the correct dosage would benefit you immensely in the long run.
